Transforming the Nedbank website into the ultimate brand showcase and top digital sales & service platform.

About the Client

Nedbank is one of the largest financial services groups in Africa, offering wholesale and retail banking, as well as insurance, asset management and wealth management services and solutions to over 7 million clients.

Project Overview

Nedbank kicked off a strategic initiative to modernise its public-facing website and building a smart, scalable platform that helps us work faster, deliver standout customer experiences and stay true to the bank’s brand identity.

This project is a masterclass in collaboration, scalability, and design systems thinking.

Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and integrating with AEM really levelled up my approach to designing for large-scale systems.

Objectives

  • Redesign the website using Nedbank’s existing brand style.
  • Deliver the site incrementally, one MVP at a time.
  • Ensure scalability through a reusable component system.
  • Design for seamless integration with AEM.
  • Collaborate with UX, CX, content and development teams.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Design of each website section, from discovery to delivery.
  • Developed a modular design system with reusable components.
  • Ensure that each release could scale and integrate seamlessly into the broader ecosystem.
  • Advocated for accessibility, responsiveness, and usability across all touch points.

I designed a flexible component system that’s easily reskinned for different brand identities across banking sectors whether it’s Personal, Private, Wealth, Business or Corporate.

To future-proof the site I designed a library of reusable components making it easy for authors to build pages without developers.

The design process can get messy, but I’ve learned to trust it because honestly, the best ideas usually show up amongst all the chaos. That said, I still test everything relentlessly to make sure it actually works.

Discovery & Planning

  • Conducted audits of the existing site and competitor benchmarks.
  • Identified pain points and opportunities with CX and UX teams.
  • Defined MVP scope for each section with product owners.

Design & Prototyping

  • Created wireframes and high-fidelity designs.
  • Designed a flexible component library to support fast iteration.
  • Ensured consistency using Nedbank’s design language.

Collaboration & Handoff

  • Held regular design reviews with stakeholders.
  • Worked with developers to ensure AEM compatibility.
  • Provided detailed documentation and specs.

Testing & Iteration

  • Participated in extensive QA and user testing.
  • Gathered feedback from internal teams and end-users.
  • Iterated on designs based on performance and usability.

Measures of Success

  • Successfully launched multiple MVP sections on time and within scope.
  • Improved design consistency and reduced development time through reusable components.
  • Enhanced user experience with a modern, responsive, and accessible interface.
  • Established a scalable design foundation for future digital initiatives.

Design is only half the story, the numbers tell the rest and these results speak for themselves.
